Last week, Westchester County Police sent a minor under the age of 21 into three stores in Cortlandt as part of continued compliance checks to ensure that vape and tobacco shops comply with county laws.
The minor first visited Vapor Tobacco King on East Main Street, where he was allowed to buy a package of four mango-flavored pods, a nicotine product valued at $16. At no point during the transaction was the minor prompted to show ID. The business was issued a summons and are due to appear in Cortlandt Town Court at a later date.
The latest compliance checks come on the heels of similar enforcement details in Mount Kisco, which saw an employee and business cited for selling a similar product. The operation is part of a series of ongoing compliance checks to ensure that businesses are adhering to recently adopted county laws that prohibit the sale of tobacco products to minors under the age of 21, up from 18.
Compliance checks were also conducted at DT Vapor and Smoke on East Main Street and Cortlandt Smoke and Vape on Albany Post Road. Both businesses passed the test and asked the minor for ID. The checks were funded through a grant from the Cortlandt Community Coalition.
“Westchester County Police regularly conduct compliance checks to ensure that local businesses are not selling alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes or nicotine-based products to people under age 21,” Public Safety Commissioner Thomas Gleason stated. “We will continue to conduct these checks and will continue to work in partnership with community organizations to encourage young people to make safe and healthy choices.”
